On December 28, 2017, Rachael Mincherton experienced an unimaginable tragedy when she awoke to find her five-year-old daughter, Lila, unresponsive beside her in their Hyde, Greater Manchester home. Despite the immediate arrival of paramedics, it was determined that Lila had been deceased for several hours, just two weeks shy of her sixth birthday.
Lila was celebrated for her vibrant red hair and joyful spirit. Her mother, Rachael, described her as “the nicest child ever,” noting her kindness and affection toward everyone she met. Lila’s enthusiasm for life was evident in her love for activities such as dancing, including tap, ballet, and cheerleading, as well as her participation in Rainbows. She was also known for her sociable nature, often taking extra time to hug her teachers at Flowery Field Primary School.
The cause of Lila’s sudden death remains unknown, leaving her family in a state of unresolved grief. An inquest into her passing was opened, with a full hearing scheduled for November 2024. During a pre-inquest review, it was revealed that some of Lila’s medical records from the weeks preceding her death had been misplaced, prompting the coroner to request a thorough search for the missing documents.
In the wake of this tragedy, Rachael and her family established a charity named Lila’s Light. The organization aims to provide bereavement bags for children who have lost a sibling, offering comfort during difficult times. To support this initiative, the family organized a fundraising event featuring a football match with actor Danny Miller and a family fun day, with all proceeds directed toward Lila’s Light.
The loss of Lila has profoundly affected her family and the community. Her memory endures through the efforts of Lila’s Light, ensuring that her joyful spirit continues to touch the lives of others.
