Heartbreaking Note from Son Left Behind Before Tragic Death

Leland Shoemake, a bright and joyful 6-year-old from Williamson, Georgia, had an enthusiasm for life that left a lasting impact on everyone around him. Known for his sharp intellect, Leland amazed his family and friends by mastering his ABCs, numbers, colors, shapes, and sight words by the age of one. He had a deep love for learning and was especially fond of history, documentaries, and watching educational channels. His family fondly remembers him as their “little nerd” who loved school, the Weather Channel, and even had an interest in ships like the Titanic.

However, in 2015, tragedy struck when Leland fell ill unexpectedly and was quickly admitted to the hospital. Doctors discovered he had contracted a rare brain infection caused by the amoeba Balamuthia mandrillaris, which he likely picked up while playing outdoors. Despite his medical team’s best efforts, Leland’s health deteriorated rapidly. What initially appeared to be meningitis turned out to be a devastating amebic infection in his brain, which led to severe symptoms such as headaches, vomiting, and double vision. After a courageous battle, Leland passed away on September 25, 2015.

The Shoemake family was devastated by the loss, but as they returned home from the hospital, they discovered something that brought them a sense of comfort during their grief. Leland had left a note for his parents. The simple message, written with a red heart, read, “Stil (sic) with you… Thank you mom and dad… Love.” The note was a beautiful and bittersweet reminder of the love he had for them, and it provided some solace amidst the unbearable sorrow of their loss. His mother, Amber, reflected on how deeply this final message resonated with her, especially as they had no idea when he had written it.

Amber shared her heartbreak and love for her son in a deeply emotional post on social media. She described how Leland was a unique child, full of life and wonder. He was the light of their lives, always joyful and full of curiosity. From his early interest in learning to his love for history and classic films like “Jaws,” Leland had an extraordinary spirit. Amber’s post also expressed the agony of losing a child, a fear she had always held, and the overwhelming reality of her son’s death. Her words captured the depth of a mother’s love and the devastating pain of losing a child far too soon.

In the wake of Leland’s passing, Amber and her family have kept his memory alive, cherishing the moments they shared and the lessons he taught them. Through their grief, they find comfort in the thought of Leland’s enduring love. The Shoemake family hopes to share Leland’s story with the world, ensuring he is never forgotten. His life serves as a reminder to cherish every moment and appreciate the precious time we have with those we love, as life can change in an instant. Leland may no longer be with them physically, but his memory will forever remain in their hearts.
