A longtime New Hampshire resident recently faced an unexpected demand from the state’s Division of Motor Vehicles. After proudly displaying her personalized license plates for a decade and a half, she was instructed to return them immediately.
The woman, a mother of four, originally requested the plates as a clever nudge to her kids. Her objective was simply to remind her sons to take care of necessary restroom visits before piling into the car for trips, short or long.
Over the years, these license plates became a lighthearted conversation starter among friends, family, and even strangers. Most people recognized the playful tone and appreciated the mother’s attempt to save time and avert messes on family outings.
However, the state’s DMV interpreted the messaging quite differently. Officials claimed the text on the plate fell under guidelines prohibiting references to “sexual or excretory acts or functions,” prompting them to deem it inappropriate.
In 2019, after owning the plates for 15 years without any complaints, the mother was shocked to receive official notice of the violation. Despite her protests that the message was harmless and far from offensive, she ultimately had no choice but to surrender her beloved plates.
