A Family’s Heartbreaking Journey Through Loss and Hope

Paul Rybkin and Karen Rodas experienced a devastating loss when their newborn son, Nathaniel, passed away just 36 hours after birth. Nathaniel’s death was caused by Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD), a rare condition that often leads to kidney failure. This loss left a profound impact on the family, but it was just the beginning of their struggles with PKD.

In 2013, their daughter, Maddy, was also diagnosed with PKD. Her diagnosis came with its own set of challenges, as she faced frequent hospitalizations throughout her early years. The family’s emotional and physical toll was substantial, especially as Maddy endured symptoms like swelling, vomiting, and extreme fatigue, spending up to 18 hours a day sleeping due to the disease’s effects.

Despite these difficult circumstances, Maddy showed remarkable resilience. She fought through the debilitating symptoms, never giving up, even though her health was in a precarious state. Her determination was a beacon of hope for her family during such a tough time, as they continued to seek answers and care for their beloved daughter.

After enduring two years of struggling with the disease, a turning point arrived when Paul offered Maddy a lifeline. His unwavering support and dedication to her well-being brought a renewed sense of hope. The family continued to pursue medical options, determined to give Maddy the chance she needed to survive and thrive.

Though Maddy had been severely undernourished due to the effects of PKD, her health eventually began to improve. With the help of her father’s commitment and the care she received, Maddy’s battle with the disease took a positive turn. It marked the beginning of her journey towards recovery and a brighter future despite the challenges she had faced.
