Honoring Officer Evan Dunn: A Tragic Loss in the Line of Duty

On November 6, 2024, a devastating incident occurred on Highway 58 in Golden, Colorado, claiming the life of 33-year-old Golden Police Officer Evan Dunn and leaving his field training officer, Officer Bethany Grusing, severely injured. The officers were responding to an earlier accident when a suspected impaired driver struck them. Officer Grusing suffered serious injuries, including a fractured cheekbone, and is now in recovery.

Officer Dunn had recently graduated from the police academy in July 2024. Before joining the Golden Police Department, he served honorably as an Army Aviation Officer and Blackhawk pilot. He also held the rank of Captain in the Army National Guard. Officer Dunn leaves behind his wife, Annalise, their beloved dog, Remy, as well as his parents and two siblings.

The driver involved, identified as 43-year-old Stephen Robert Geer, faces charges of vehicular homicide while under the influence, two counts of vehicular assault while driving under the influence, and failure to exercise due care near a stationary emergency vehicle resulting in death.

In support of Officer Grusing’s recovery, a special fund has been established to assist her during this challenging time.

This heartbreaking tragedy is a stark reminder of the daily risks faced by law enforcement officers in their commitment to serving their communities. It also emphasizes the importance of obeying traffic laws, such as slowing down and moving over for stationary emergency vehicles, to protect those who work tirelessly to ensure public safety.

We extend our deepest sympathies to the family, friends, and colleagues of Officer Dunn and send our thoughts and prayers to Officer Grusing, wishing her a full and speedy recovery.
