With heavy hearts, we extend our deepest condolences on the passing of Sgt. Marty Melerine Sr., a 35-year veteran of the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office. Sgt. Melerine, aged 85, passed away peacefully at his Poydras home early this morning, Wednesday, Dec. 4, surrounded by his loving family. Sheriff James Pohlmann expressed profound sadness over this loss, stating, “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends. He will be greatly missed.”
Sgt. Melerine’s distinguished career in law enforcement began in the late 1980s with the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office Marine Division. Over the years, his dedication and versatility saw him serve in various roles, including crime prevention and the Field Operations Bureau Patrol Division. His steadfast commitment to the community was an inspiration to all who had the privilege of working alongside him.
In 2008, Sgt. Melerine joined the Traffic Division, where he continued to serve part-time until his passing. Known for assisting with vehicle lockouts and responding to traffic accidents, his efforts impacted countless lives in St. Bernard Parish. Sheriff Pohlmann remarked, “If you’ve ever locked your keys in your car and called for help, there’s a good chance Sgt. Melerine was there to lend a hand. His dedication often went unnoticed but touched so many in meaningful ways.”
Beyond his professional contributions, Sgt. Melerine was a devoted family man. After losing his beloved wife, Vivian Gonzales Melerine, in June, he cherished his role as a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his daughter, Jill A. Melerine, two sons, Marty A. Melerine Jr. and Dean J. Melerine, and a loving extended family. His legacy of service and love for his community will endure in their hearts.
The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office mourns the loss of a dedicated public servant and friend. Sgt. Melerine’s lifelong commitment to service and the well-being of St. Bernard Parish leaves an indelible mark on the community. We honor his memory and extend our support to his family during this difficult time.
