A 32-year-old woman from Ohio, named Jordan Brielle, endured a terrifying ordeal that began with a severe addiction to her vape pen. She was so dependent on it that she wouldn’t part with the device even when sleeping or showering. Initially, she only experienced minor signs of distress, like feeling pressure on her chest and dealing with persistent coughing. However, as time went on, repeated hospital visits for breathing difficulties yielded no clear answers, leaving her exhausted and frightened.
By mid-November, Brielle began noticing an alarming heaviness in her chest, as though an invisible weight pressed down on her. Her trips to the hospital became more frequent, as she struggled with severe respiratory symptoms and a nearly lost voice. During this period, her body began to swell from the ankles up, her complexion turned gray, and she became disoriented—all warning signs that something was seriously wrong. Yet, despite doctors sending her home multiple times, the underlying problem remained undiscovered and unresolved.
Eventually, her condition deteriorated to the point that she could barely move. She couldn’t shake the feeling that she was literally on the brink of death. Then one day in May, Brielle’s partner discovered her completely unresponsive, lying in bed with black mucus leaking from her mouth and nose. After rushing her to the hospital, physicians were forced to suction two liters of thick, black fluid from her lungs, a grim testament to the damage that heavy vaping had inflicted on her body.
Brielle was placed in a medically induced coma for 11 days, and upon awakening, she learned just how close she had come to losing her life. Doctors informed her that extensive vaping and smoking had seriously harmed her lungs, and she even suffered a minor brain injury due to oxygen deprivation. Though relieved to have survived, Brielle now faces an uncertain future, aware that she may experience a similar crisis again if she isn’t extraordinarily careful with her health.
Since leaving the hospital, Brielle has given up vaping, grateful that she still has a chance to recover and warn others about the dangers of e-cigarettes. Her ordeal highlights the urgent need for caution, moderation, and awareness when it comes to vaping. She hopes that sharing her story will encourage others to quit before their habits lead them down a similarly terrifying path.
