Joe Bryant, father of NBA legend Kobe Bryant and a former professional basketball player, has passed away at the age of 69. La Salle University, where Bryant once played and later coached, expressed deep sorrow over his loss, stating that he was “a cherished part of the Explorer family and will be missed by all.” Fran Dunphy, the university’s current head coach, revealed that Bryant had recently experienced a severe stroke, which contributed to his passing.
Bryant’s basketball career began at La Salle University, where he quickly became a standout player, averaging an impressive 20.8 points per game. In 1975, he was selected by the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Draft. During his professional career, he played for the Philadelphia 76ers and several other teams, leaving a lasting impact on the league. The 76ers paid tribute to Bryant, describing him as “a local basketball icon” who left an indelible mark on the sport and the city.
His influence extended far beyond the court. Doug Young, a former teammate of Kobe Bryant, remembered Joe not just for his skill but for his character. “Joe was a role model who made basketball enjoyable for everyone around him,” Young shared. “He pushed us to be better players and better people.” His leadership and positive energy were qualities that teammates and fans alike admired.
After retiring from playing, Bryant continued his basketball journey as a coach at various levels. He led teams in both the United States and abroad, including a stint as head coach of the Los Angeles Sparks in the WNBA. His dedication to the game and commitment to nurturing young talent left a legacy that will be remembered by many in the basketball community.
